Charitable Giving: What to Expect from 2026 Tax Changes

At Pride Foundation, we know that giving — at every level — plays a vital role in sustaining LGBTQ+ communities across the Northwest. Starting in 2026, new federal tax rules will affect how charitable giving is treated. In the spirit of transparency and to help you stay prepared, we’ve highlighted a few key updates and considerations to keep in mind for the year ahead.

For Donors Who Do Not Itemize

Individuals who take the standard deduction can claim a deduction for cash contributions made to qualifying charities:

  • $1,000 for a single filer; $2,000 for married couples filing jointly.

This deduction applies only to cash gifts to public charities. Donations to donor-advised funds are not eligible for this deduction.

For Donors Who Itemize

New 0.5% AGI floor

  • For taxpayers who itemize, only the portion of your charitable contribution that exceeds 0.5% of your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) can be deducted.

Cap on high-income deductions

  • For people in the top tax bracket, the tax benefit of your itemized charitable deductions will be capped at 35%.

Traditional AGI limits still apply

  • The ability to deduct cash gifts up to 60% of AGI to public charities has been made permanent.

Pride Foundation Giving Deadlines

  • Donor Advised Fund gifts must be initiated before December 19th to ensure payment prior to the 2025 charitable giving deadline of December 31st.
  • Year-end donations must be postmarked by Wednesday, December 31st.
